What to Look for When Hiring a Branding Agency for Your Trades Business
By the time a trades business owner talks to us, a lot of them have already tried something else first — a freelancer found on a marketplace site, a cousin who's "good with design," or a general marketing agency that treated their HVAC or plumbing company the same way it would treat a coffee shop. Here's what actually separates a good fit from another disappointing round.
Do They Actually Understand Trades, or Just Design in General?
A logo that looks good on a screen doesn't automatically work on a truck, a uniform, or a yard sign baking in direct sun for months. Trades branding has its own constraints — vinyl production limits, legibility at highway speed, colors that still read right on a work shirt after fifty washes — that a generalist agency simply hasn't run into before. If an agency can't speak to any of that, it's a sign they'll be learning on your dime.
Is It One System, or a Pile of Separate Vendors?
A logo from one place, a website from another, a van wrap from a print shop that's never seen the brand guide — that's how a business ends up with a truck, a website, and a business card that all look like they belong to three different companies. We've written before about how much a full brand system actually costs and the signs a business has outgrown its current branding — both come back to the same root issue: pieces built separately rarely end up looking like one brand.
Does Their Price Make Sense Against What You're Actually Spending?
The U.S. Small Business Administration's long-standing guidance suggests businesses put roughly 7-8% of gross revenue toward marketing. That's a useful gut check either direction — a quote that's wildly below that range is worth asking what's being cut to hit the price, and one that's wildly above it deserves a clear explanation of what's actually included.
Can They Show You Real Work in Your Industry?
Stock mockups and generic portfolio pieces are easy to produce and don't prove much. Ask to see actual finished work for businesses similar to yours — real trucks, real job sites, real results — not just polished renders. You can see what that looks like for us in our work.
If you're currently weighing a few options, a free 10 minute brand review is a no-pressure way to see what we'd actually recommend for your business before you commit to anyone.
